Taking Flight: the thoughts, dreams, ideas, aspirations, and adventures of a little bird leaving her nest
My family has always been the most important aspect of my life. Growing up, my parents, brother and sister, aunt and uncle, cousins, grandmother and best friend’s family all lived within a two block radius of me.
Weekends brought the promise of Shabbat dinners with the entire family; summers brought the promise of swimming, reading, imagining, and creating in one of the three backyards between us; and birthdays brought the promise of original songs, paintings, poems, or other artistic creations by every other family member dedicated to the king or queen of the evening.
It was a communal upbringing, and it helped shape every aspect of my life. Luckily, those closest to me have also been supportive of me through all of my stages–even the questionable ones. Out of a nest that emphasized family, community, love, and support hatched a little bird: fiercely loyal, yet happily independent.
I thrive on independence. But as my father once so perfectly said, its independence within the structure of strong relationships. I’ve had the amazing experiences of traveling and living abroad, but with a few exceptions it has all been with my parents. Staying in my hometown for college made it easy to live at home and maintain the lovely, safe balance I have enjoyed my entire life.
By this August, I will have spent 12 months away from home. Its the first time I’ve truly been on my own. Of course its been an adventure navigating a new *big* cities, and meeting people, but I’ve found that the things I’ve enjoyed the most have been the smaller experiences.
I hope that through this blog I will recount memories frozen in my mind–so that they can be frozen in time. I hope you enjoy browsing.
