They say a picture is worth a thousand words, yet when I witness beauty I find that I am always speechless. Not one word comes to my mind–but I am not sure I would want them to. Nature..beauty..they are so deeply engrained within us that it is impossible to truly describe or convey the feelings and emotions we experience to another person. For other people always have different emotions; they see different beauty; they experience other feelings. It is better then to sit in silence and wordlessly share the beauty with those who are with you. Allowing beauty to speak to you and to us–allowing it to be both a very personal, and connecting experience. Speaking to each of us in its own voice. Perhaps you will feel the breathy whispers carried by the wind, while I hear the harmony of singing birds.
Its not possible to capture this beauty, for the bird will never sing the same song in a picture you present to visiting relatives. And though they may appreciate the picture’s beauty, the beauty of the subject of the picture (the true beauty) cannot be shared in the same way–for they will only be able to see the you in the picture, and not the us.
Yet I take pictures anyway, hoping that somehow I can bridge the valley and convey the beauty I felt and witnessed at the moment the camera’s shutter closed. In each picture I try to recall exactly how I was feeling, or what I was thinking at that time. Unfortunately, the camera freezes time while the mind erases it. And soon, perhaps, pictures will be all we have left.
